Marie Stothard, a Second World War veteran who ran the Red Lion and Blue Heaven in Hull, turns 100 on 28 October with a party at Wilton Lodge care home.

Marie Stothard, a Second World War veteran who spent years running pubs across Hull, turns 100 on Wednesday 28 October. Family, friends, fellow residents and staff will gather at Wilton Lodge care home on Holderness Road, where she lives, to mark the day.

Members of the Hull FC Veterans Community will join the party, and the local mayor is also expected, the organisers say.

A century of stories

Marie lived through the Second World War, and the organisers say she has plenty of stories to tell from her hundred years.

Many of them come from behind the bar. Over the years she ran a string of Hull pubs, among them:

  • the Commercial
  • the Red Lion
  • the Elephant and Castle
  • the Blue Heaven

Match ball at the MKM

Last year Marie was invited to deliver the match ball at Hull FC’s Armed Forces Match Day at the MKM Stadium, and she was given a warm reception from supporters. The club’s veterans group is now coming to her.

The celebration

The party runs from 12pm to 2pm on Wednesday 28 October at Wilton Lodge, Holderness Road, Hull HU9 3DW. It is a gathering for Marie’s family, friends and the people she lives with, rather than a public event.
