Beverley first, the riding with it
Beverley is the anchor: the county town, the council’s base and the place people here are proudest to name. Around it the authority takes in Cottingham, Hessle, Anlaby and Swanland on the Hull side, Bridlington and Hornsea on the coast, Driffield and Pocklington inland, and Goole and Howden on the Ouse. It is a big area with no shared identity, so we anchor on Beverley and cover the council’s decisions in full, because they apply everywhere in it.
Where the line runs
Kingston upon Hull is a separate unitary authority. If you live in Hull, none of this council’s bin rounds, planning decisions or council tax bands apply to you. That boundary catches people out constantly, especially around Cottingham and Hessle, so we name the authority in every story and on every reference page.
What we work from
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood and coastal warnings for the Humber, the Ouse and the Holderness coast, and company filings in The Gazette. Coastal erosion and flooding are permanent subjects here and we report the official position rather than the version going round.
